Summer too short?

18th August 2007

It’s been a while since I wrote a baiku but Fritz linked to one over at Cycle-Licious so here you go:

Rain sprays off my tire
Yesterday I cursed the heat
Is this summer’s end?

A real blog post! ;-) I usually just see your delicious bookmarks.

Is “tire” one syllable or two? It rhymes with “hire,” but hire and higher are homonyms and we think of higher as a two syllable word. Dire (as in Dire Straits) and dyer (somebody who dyes) are similar. I’m not being pedantic — I’m just being tired and weird.

I’ll post the link Sunday if I get around to it, though it might actually happen Monday. Now it’s time for bed. Good night.

About tire: I think it depends on how you pronounce it. For me, it’s definitely a one-syllable word. And hire and higher are not homonyms in the way I speak.
