As long as they aren't dug up, a trim a year will do those red bushes good - and now they look like red coral don't you think?

My two favorites from the batch - "Compression" (fossils come to mind) and "Escape to Freedom" (the green on the concrete is a nice touch).

Julia: I missed your earlier comment. Thanks for the compliment. Although I am mostly familiar with Man Ray's experimental stuff, I'll take this for a compliment since he did some fantastic graphic design.

Ram: it looks OK in color. But the color didn't add anything and black-and-white emphasizes the shapes of the photo, especially the shadow of the vase, and that's why I made the picture in the first place. Or least that's why I think I made it. There's no telling what the right brain is locking onto while the left brain is busy choosing an aperture and making sure the horizon is level.

Tommy,
beautiful Shot! I liked this very much, specially, black/white has enhanced the sharpness of this picture. How would this look in color?

Thanks, Julia. I assume you mean the one I linked to above and not the other bit of a red bush that I photographed today (I wish I knew what to call this other than "red bush"). I was hoping for stronger contrast between the branches/wire and the rest of the background but there was just so much detail there in the gravel and the mulch. I could probably do some tedious masking to drop the contrast of those areas way down but I certainly didn't feel up to it last night.

I like the red bush pic. I've been pondering how to photograph that bush since you first wrote about it, and here you go figuring it out!

These are the covers I was thinking about. I have to admit, I never read any of the Tarzan books until I had to write a short piece about Burroughs. I got to know these covers as we worked with the Burroughs family for the rights to print the first book's jacket in the magazine, but I never did figure out why the illustrator made Tarzan so seedy looking in his first incarnation.

John: good to hear from you again. I lost track of you after the trip to China and my moving around RSS aggregators. Thanks for dropping by.

Julia: the covers of the paperbacks I read were black with illustrations by Boris Vallejo inset on the front, and Tarzan was always active in the ones I am used to. See this list of the covers of the editions I read.

Tarzan is the only piece missing really. Check out Tarzan Returns for ferns and snakey trees. Question - why did the illustrator always have Tarzan drooping as he sat languidly in a tree?

I so agree about the green. The green pops out because the stone is slightly reddish and thus it adds more dimension to the photo perhaps?

Glad you liked it. This is one of my favorites. The green seems essential to me: it's more than just a contrast to the rest of the picture but I can't find the right words to say why. Maybe that's a good thing. Were I able to reduce it all to words, there would be no point in taking the picture.

That is a stunning picture! I love the depth.

You probably don't remember me, as we didn't really know one another, but I grew up in Etowah and lived next door to your grandmother in Seven Cedars. I stumbled across your blog when I was looking for pictures of Etowah on Flickr last year.
